NATURAL BLEACH SDN BHD was established in 1994 to design, manufacture and market, safe and cost-effective bleaching earths.
The founder and key people in Natural Bleach Sdn Bhd have vast experience in edible oil refining, and bleaching earth technologies, having been active in these industries, research, manufacture and marketing since the 1970s, and have obtained patents, and published papers on bleaching earths and oil refining.
Natural Bleach Sdn Bhd is a customer focused company, providing products to match the needs for today, and developing new products to meet the future needs of the industry.
Initially, Natural Bleach Sdn Bhd produced Natural bleaching earths. However, due to market demands, Natural Bleach Sdn Bhd expanded its range to include both “Natural” and Acid-Activated Bleaching Earths. We also produce a range of activated carbons blended with our natural and acid-activated bleaching earths. The activated carbons assist in the removal of dioxins, PolyAromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), pigments and other undesirable materials that are difficult to remove utilizing bleaching earths alone.
Supplies of our raw materials are secure as we have our own mining company, in India, Natural Bleach Earths Pvt Ltd, which has a number of mines in India.
Our production facilities are strategically located in North Port Klang, Malaysia, form where we ship our products worldwide, as well as to our local customers in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Bleaching earths are utilized to remove pigments and other impurities from oils, fats and waxes. The leading application is in the refining of edible oils, where bleaching earths remove pigments, gums, soaps, oxidation products etc. from the oils to render them fit for human consumption, and to improve the shelf-life of the oil. Other uses of bleaching earths include the refining of non-edible oils, and the re-refining of synthetic and mineral oils.
Bleaching earths are manufactured from natural minerals, e.g. minerals that have a high content of the clay Montmorillonite. There are two main types of processing scheme which are utilized to produce our bleaching earths. They are physical and chemical processing.
In physical processing, the natural mineral is activated without the use of chemicals, and is dried and milled to give the desired performance and properties. This process is environmentally friendly, as it doses not produce waste materials. Natural Bleach derived its name from its signature grades of natural bleaching earths, which are produced by our physical activation process. These grades of bleaching earth may not have the highest bleaching performance as compared with acid-activated, when comparing bleached oils alone. However, the Natural or physically activated bleaching earths have benefits as they assist the refiner in production of refined oils that are of low or negligible content of the harmful 3MCPDs and Trans Fatty Acids.
In chemical processing, which is more commonly called acid-activation, natural Montmorillonite mineral is treated with mineral acid, such as sulphuric acid. The acid-leaching process is designed to modify the properties of the Montmorillonite to improve its performance.
In classical acid-activation the raw clay (Montmorillonite) is immersed in sulphuric acid, for a certain period, at the requisite temperature and pressure, to leach components from the clay, so as to chemically develop its porosity and other important properties. The activated clay is then washed to remove free acid and leached components, before being dried and milled to the produce a free-flowing acid-activated bleaching earth powder.
The chemical “wastes” from our acid-activation process are more correctly called by-products as they are utilized to manufacture co-products that are utilized in such applications such as fertilizers, and water-treatment chemicals. In this way our whole process matches our target of being environmentally friendly.
WHY DO WE NEED BLEACHING EARTHS?
Bleaching Earths remove a number of undesirable components from the oil being processed, e.g. :-
Oxidized materials, such as aldehydes and ketones, that are off-flavours, and act as pro-oxidants, and would otherwise lead to rapid rancidity in the refined oil.
Trace metals, that would lead to rapid rancidity in the refined oil.
Gums, that would result in frothing and spiting when wet foodstuffs are fried in the refined oil.
Pigments, such as Chlorophyll and Carotene that, in the presence of sunlight, could lead to rancidity. It should be noted that Carotene is a functional component, as it is converted to vitamin A in our body. Vitamin A is necessary for the maintenance of good eyesight. For this reason, there may be a requirement to maintain the carotene content of the oil, whilst removing other undesirable components. (Our product range includes bleaching earths that enable the carotene to be maintained in the oil, whilst the undesirable components are removed).
Soaps, also needs to be removed from chemically refined oils, as they would otherwise lead to rancidity.
Bleaching earth is probably the most important chemical utilized in the refining of oils & fats, where its function is to purify, decolourize and impart stability in the refined oil.
Although bleaching earth is primarily utilized in the refining of edible oils & fats, it is also widely used for refining non-edible oils, e.g. industrial triglycerides, transformer oil, mineral oils, soap, paraffins and waxes.
There are many different types of edible oils that need to be treated, and the most appropriate bleaching earth/activated carbon blend to do the job depends on a number of factors, including; the type of oil, the type of refining utilized, and the refining conditions.

We also produce a range of natural and acid-activated bleaching earths that are blended with various types of activated carbons. The activated carbons assist in the removal of dioxins, PolyAromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), pigments and other undesirable materials.
The specified quality parameters for our bleaching earths reflect their importance to the refiner. The parameters are Activity, Moisture Content and Oil-Filtration Time.
Activity is a measure of the performance for the removal of the pigments and other impurities, and is expressed as a percentage versus the standard, for each grade of bleaching earth. Activity is an important parameter as it reflects the quantity of bleaching earth that will be required for the refining of given oil.
Moisture content is important as is relates to the flow properties of the bleaching earth. Too high a moisture content would result in difficulty in conveying the bleaching earth powder.
Oil-Filtration Time is important as it relates to the filtration rate when separating the spent bleaching earth from the oil being processed. If the oil-filtration time is too long, then the production rate of the refinery would decrease.

Natural Bleaching Earths, Acid-Activated Bleaching Earths and Activated Carbons all have different properties. For this reason, the refiner must select which bleaching earth, or bleaching earth blended with activated carbon is most appropriate, to meet their desired properties for the fully refined oil they are processing. Our bleaching earth are utilized to successfully refine a range of chemically and physically refined edible oils, including palm oil & its fractions, coconut oil, soyabean oil, Canola/rapeseed oil, groundnut oil, mustard seed oil, rice bran oil, cottonseed oil, and corn oil.

Each absorbent has different porosity, surface area, and oil-retention properties. The porosity must match the size of the impurities the refiner wishes to remove, and at the same time, the oil-retention of the bleaching earth or activated carbon blend should be minimized.

Our bleaching earths are available in 25kg multi-ply paper sacks, Jumbo bags (e.g. 1,000kg), and in some locations in bulk-powder tanker loads.
Bleaching earths and activated carbons are powerful absorbents, and should be stored in a clean, dry place away from any strong odours.
Quality control begins at the mine-site, where the desired raw clay is selectively mined, under the watchful eyes of our mining specialists. Any impurities present are removed, and the quality of the clay is verified before despatch to our factory.
The raw-clay is protected from contamination during the journey from the mine-site to our factory.
At our factory the clay is processed to develop its bleaching performance and to transform it into a free-flowing powder, or granules, with the desired chemical and physical properties.
Blending with activated carbons has been introduced to expand our range of powerful absorbents, to match the needs of the market.
The key properties which we control are: bleaching performance, filtration properties, and moisture content.
Our quality control laboratory is well equipped to measure the key properties of bleaching earth. The testing equipment is of the highest standard, and includes moisture meters, vibrating sieves, automatic Lovibond Tintometers, automatic bulk density and oil-filtration time analysis equipment.
